Toke Makinwa

Nigerian actress and media personality, Toke Makinwa has revealed that she lost her sister after the just concluded season of Big Brother Naija show in which she played host.

The On Becoming author made this revelation via Twitter on Monday, while thanking fans for their support after recently coming under heavy criticism for being picked as the new Gulder Ultimate search host.

“You guys make me cry, the amount of support has been so overwhelming, I will not disappoint you all. It’s been the darkest 10 days of my life, I got off the reunion show for BBN to hear that my big sister passed away. My family is going through so much right now guys, thank you,” she tweeted.

Thanking Nigerian Breweries, the organisers of GUS, for being helpful, Makinwa further said that despite her heartbreak, she had to forge ahead with the new task before her.

“Having to work in the midst of heart wrenching pain is confusing, the Production guys and the entire NB team have been super helpful too. The show must go on so I wipe my tears between takes and focus on delivering on this job. God is still God, I guess,” she tweeted.
While not giving out details, Toke Makinwa had earlier told fans on Twitter that she was going through dark times.

“This weekend has been one of the darkest yet, I’ve had to pull myself together to work through it all. Wiping away tears as I get ready, shuffling between sets and still standing. You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option you’ve got left,” she tweeted on Wednesday.

The radio personality continues to come under fire on social media after she was announced as the host of the recently rebooted Gulder Ultimate Search, which airs on the 16th of October.

She has however promised to disappoint naysayers by bringing her A-game to the show.
“You all be so mad it gives me a kick to watch you all cry. Even if the show airs, I know you won’t give me my flowers because it’ll kill you to admit that you are wrong. But you know what? The ball is already in motion, I’ve moved on to even more things that’ll drive you more mad,” she tweeted on Monday.

Responding to questions on her ability to compere the show, several of her colleagues have come out to defend her talent.

Frank Edoho on Twitter said, “I see some people getting irked about Toke Makinwa’s selection as the host of the Gulder Ultimate Search. Hate her all you like, but she still remains a very talented presenter, who most people look forward to seeing when the show kicks off. Don’t let hatred choke you!”
Kemi Adetiba, Director of King of Boys also congratulated “the indestructible @tokstarr for succeeding the throne as the new GUS host for this season”.
