I stumbled upon “Akara and A Million Lies” on @africamagic showcase channel 151 while channel surfing, and the title immediately captured my attention. Curiosity got the better of me, and I’m glad I gave it a chance. This movie turned out to be a pleasant surprise, offering a unique blend of storytelling, impressive visuals, and memorable performances.
One of the standout elements was the production design, which complemented the excellent cinematography perfectly. The film’s setting, which deviated from the familiar Lagos scenery, was a welcome change of pace. It showcased the beauty of other Nigerian cities, reminding us that there’s indeed life beyond Lagos.
The storyline itself was refreshing, straying from the typical romantic narratives that dominate Nollywood. The plot was engaging, with unexpected twists and turns that kept me hooked. However, there were moments where the pacing felt a bit slow, and some scenes could have been tighter.
Despite this, the relatively unknown cast delivered impressive performances that left a lasting impression. Their chemistry on screen was undeniable, making their characters’ interactions believable and relatable.
Visually, the film was stunning. The exterior cityscape shots were breathtaking and cinematic, bringing a film-like quality to the TV screen. The cinematographer did an excellent job of capturing the beauty of the Nigerian landscape.
“Akara and A Million Lies” is a must-watch for anyone looking for a refreshing change from the usual Nollywood fare. I’d give it a solid 7/10.
