Supporters of the Lagos State chairman of the National Union of Road Transportation Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), on Thursday clashed with members of Tricycle Operators and Owners Association of Nigeria (TOOAN).
TOOAN is being led in the state by Azeez Abiola (Istijabah).
Supporters of the two men, it was gathered, clashed at Mieran, Alimosho, Abule Egba and Command areas of the state.
1steleven9jatv.com gathered that the national leadership of the NURTW, led by Alhaji Tajudeen Baruwa and the Board of Trustees of TOOAN had approved the appointment of Istijabah as the State Caretaker Chairman of Tricycle owners on Wednesday in the presence of MC Oluomo in Abuja and ordered them to work together in Lagos.
Sources said that before now, TOOAN had no chairman in Lagos as the association was controlled and managed by the NURTW led by MC Oluomo.
One of the state Caretaker Committee member of TOOAN, who spoke with WesternPost at the secretariat of the association, said MC Oluomo called Istijabah for a meeting on Thursday at the NURTW state secretariat.
According to him, unknown to the TOOAN leader, NURTW members had positioned to attack him as they threw bottles at him on his arrival.
The Caretaker Committee member said Istijabah’s vechicle was also allegedly destroyed during the attack
It was learnt that the Abuja decision may not have gone down well with MC Oluomo, who allegedly directed his supporters, the state executives council and tricycle operators in the state not to recognise the leadership of Abiola.At about 10:30am when WesternPost visited Agbelekale area of Alimosho Local Government, the two groups were chasing each other with cutlasses, axes, bottles and other dangerous weapons which made commuters to run for safety.Similarly, At Abule Egba bus stop, there was confrontation between supporters of the two union leaders as passers-by scaper for safety.It would be recalled that there had been crisis in Lagos NURTW at Lagos Island which led to the death of members of the Union and also the arrest of two of the Union’s leaders in the area.
