As the city of Ibadan mourns the passing of its 43rd monarch, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, fresh attention has turned to the question of succession.

In the midst of rising public speculation, Isaac Ladoja, son of High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has affirmed that his father is well-prepared to take on the mantle of Olubadan.
Speaking in a telephone interview with VANGUARD NEWS on Tuesday July 8, 2025, Isaac described his father’s journey as one marked by patience, service, and a deep understanding of leadership, both traditional and political.
“The long wait for the crown has been worthwhile,” he said. “My father’s experiences, both in public service and in traditional affairs, have uniquely prepared him for this royal leadership role.”
High Chief Rashidi Ladoja, a respected figure in Yoruba land, is a former governor of Oyo State and a ranking member of the Olubadan-in-Council, the traditional cabinet responsible for succession in Ibadan’s highly structured monarchy.
While no official pronouncement has been made, Ladoja’s name has prominently featured in public discourse as a natural successor, given his place in the carefully maintained chieftaincy line.
Oba Olakulehin passed away on Monday, just days after celebrating his 90th birthday. His passing, though expected due to his age and frail health, has left a void in the ancient city’s traditional institution. Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country in honour of the late monarch’s peaceful reign.
According to custom, the next Olubadan is selected based on a rotational system between the two ruling lines — the Otun (civil) and Balogun (military) lines — with progression often determined by seniority and years of service within the council.
Isaac Ladoja expressed hope that tradition will prevail and that the new leadership will reflect the wisdom of the city’s revered customs.
“We trust the Olubadan-in-Council to make the right decision at the right time,” he added. “Ibadan deserves a leader who understands her history, her people, and the weight of the crown.”
A formal announcement is expected in the coming days.
