Indication has emerged on how a dying woman made an effort at retaliating to ensure that she died with her alleged killer.
This incident happened in Otun-Akute, an area in Ogun State. The woman who is now deceased was Lateefat. According to a report by The Punch, she was set ablaze by her estranged husband who had been bitter that she left him. The estranged husband identified as Ponle Adebanjo had on several occasions threatened his wife to return home and live with him or he would kill her.
But the wife ignored him. According to the reports, neighbours confirmed that Adebanjo used to abuse the wife when they lived together. The beating was so serious that she was hospitalized on several occasions. Afraid that she may die as a result of the frequent beating by her husband, Lateefat decided to rent another place after which she moved out of the man’s house.
Unfortunately, the angry husband came back on Saturday night to carry out his threat. He poured petrol on Lateefat and set her on fire. As she was burning, the dying wife struggled and managed to grab him too and the two of them kept burning until neighbours were able to come to their rescue.
But it was already too late. Lateefat died when they were rushed to the hospital on that fateful Saturday. Her husband saw the next day but could not make it as he died later. The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed this development.
