Popular Nigerian actress, Adunni Ade, has opened up about her spiritual journey and personal struggles after relocating to the United States.
Speaking during an emotional interview shared by WithChude, the actress reflected on her faith, identity, and the period of darkness she experienced away from her religion.
“I was born as a Muslim. I studied Islamic Religious Studies in secondary school, but when I left Nigeria and moved back to the States, that was where I went astray,” she said.
She recounted how living in Kentucky, a predominantly white and racially tense state, made it difficult to maintain her religious practices.
“My mom lives in Kentucky and Kentucky is dominated by white people. It’s more of a racist state in America. So, I couldn’t find a mosque there. I went astray from Islam and God in general. That was when I experienced so much darkness in my life at that time.”
Adunni explained that her journey back to faith began unexpectedly. “Years went by and I met a pastor at MFM, and she drew me back into God, although Islam never left me. It was difficult to get back to Islam because my mom is a Christian.”
Upon returning to Nigeria, she started reconnecting with her faith privately.
“I would secretly get back to my daily prayers. I noticed that in my line of work, it’s almost forbidden to publicly say you are a Muslim. It’s almost as if you are being looked down upon.”

She emphasized that Islam, to her, is more about inner values than outward appearances. “Islam for me is not about covering your head. It’s what you and I cannot see. It’s how you treat others and relate with them.”
She concluded, “By me saying it, it was just because I was tired of keeping it a secret… I’m not saying Christianity is not a good religion. I would never say that. I’m just saying what works for me is Islam.”
